To be honest, she still wasn't sure what to make of Jamie. Aside from he was extremely nice, rather quiet and, though she'd never say so out loud, cute, very cute. Not the type of thought Kaylen would care to linger on long as relationships never work out for her. Those tattoos were a huge part of the reason why. Hef and Jade didn't like anyone they did not approve of getting too close to their girl. Complicated further because no one has ever been good enough in their eyes.
Fessing up about a major quirk wasn't so hard as it seemed at first. Jamie's silence was a bit unnerving. "Are you still breathing?" Not risking any quick moves until sure he wasn't about to go psycho. Understandably, he had questions. Who wouldn't? "Yes, in this form they are very real." Part of the reason Kaylen felt the need to show him was because of their protective nature. They were not quite so reliant on their brilliant personalities as it first seemed. "Are you ok?"
Hef was not shy at all. Those short legs with razor sharp claws marched right up to Jamie's bewildered form, cocking his head to one side so as to stare him down with one single beady eyed. Flicking that tongue in the process. Just to see how much of a fraidy cat the boy might be, the dragon gave a guttural growl. For which he got a swift, emasculating pop on the tush which completely burst the lizards ego. "Be nice or miss dinner."
"You wouldn't.." Poor Jamie would not hear the dragon's words only Kaylen's response.
"Try me little monster and you won't eat for a week. Return.." Hef would turn to black smoke in the blink of an eye. The dark fog surrounding her fingers until the ink pooled and swirled to form the dragon tattoo across her flesh once again. Jade was allowed to roam free. The panther was more well mannered, choosing to rub along the side of Jamie's leg unless he ran away instead.
"She's friendly unless there's danger about. Hef's a grouch but he'll come around." Was time to redirect unless Jamie had more questions. "Should we go to investigate the town? I'll pull the cat before we get too close."

"Oh shit!" He did end up jumping a little when the cat rubbed against him. It wasn't that he was afraid. Well, not entirely afraid, anyway. More so surprised that they were real and not some Rhydin magic trick. Didn't everything seem to be a trick these days? after realizing that the animal was real he made a sort of apology with a soft, "Sorry, I just..." but there didn't seem to be a need to finish his explanation. Kaylen was already calling the dragon back and mentioning she would do the same for the other.
"Yea, we should head towards town." He admitted, starting the steps downhill to the structures they saw in the distance. How far away were they? Four miles? Less or more? His thumbs hooked at the rungs of the straps of his backpack as he looked at her, "Why don't you just keep them in animal form all the time? People have weird pets all the time." Dragons being in the red dragon inn and what not. Dragons didn't have much to do with Jamie, never seemed interested and honestly, he had only seen them from afar. That was a far cry from being personally sized up by one, for sure.
"So how are are they, anyway? Are they like... spiritual guardians that stay in the family or what?" He didn't know what else to ask her, really. It was important to him that he not sound dumb or at least, too dumb, given the situation. At least she wasn't a vampire, right? Out to drain his blood and all that mess. At least she was mostly just a person. She'd sort of told him about the tattoos but he found his mind was still trying to wrap around it.
"So... you're never alone, are you?" The question of her personal privacy hung in the air.

Jade looked up at that boy as if he'd lost his dang mind reacting in such a way. It was just a friendly rub. Kaylen couldn't help but laugh at Jamie's reaction. "It's alright. Most people scream. She's really just an over sized cat."
'Excuse me!' Came the instant reply. One day Jamie might be able to hear them as well. For now, she was the only one suffering the blessing or curse of hearing their retorts.
"She doesn't like to be called a cat." Apparent as the panther hissed at it's owner. "It's a pride thing. I'm not to call her a kitty or Hef a lizard. I'd advise you to do the same." Taking care of the furry attitude with one word. "Return." And the tattoo soon formed again on her other hand, only to slither away and sulk somewhere within the privacy of Kaylen's clothes. "She'll get over it." Showing they were more family than caretaker and pets.
There was a great deal of relief in knowing he was fine with continuing the journey towards town. From the distance, it would be a good stretch of the legs. She didn't mind the walk. Gave them some more time to get to better know each other. "Strange animals like mine are illegal where I'm from. If not, then people get scared or, in some cases, want to steal them to sell on the black market. Which means Hef would end up stuffed and Jade would be part of a coat. I usually set them free at night when no one is around or when we're in our room." In Rhydin, the true dragons would probably eat Hef for a snack after he smarted off one too many times.
As they walked, she kept a keen eye on their surroundings. If they were in some distant part of Rhydin, anything could happen from anywhere. Being a good multitasker, it didn't interfere with answering Jamie's question. It was natural for him to be curious. Kaylen was glad he chose to gather more intel for he'd be more at ease the next time the two charges were freed again. "My parents and brother each have a tattoo. It's a tradition to choose one on your 21st birthday." In her ignorance of the work involved, she accepted two. "They're spirit guides. At least they will be when they're all grown up. I have to raise them first. So we're the guardians of the guardians. Strange as that sounds. Not sure if I'm doing a good job or not. Normally my family would be around to help." Which is why the library had been so promising as a resource.
Privacy. What was that? "Very rarely." Shrugging. "I leave them from time to time. At night, they have their own beds to sleep in at the inn. But most of the time they're with me. They hear and see all. Have my own little peanut gallery in my head 24/7. People think I'm insane..sometimes I do too." A blessing and a curse. "Can't feel sorry for myself though. Was my choice. I wouldn't trade them for the world. Might let someone borrow them awhile.." Offering a wide smile which didn't reach her eyes. She didn't like to frown or bemoan her lot in life. It could be so much worse.
"So..you've spent you're whole life searching for this bracelet and your friend. Must have seen a lot in your journeys."

"I guess cat and lizard would seem pretty insulting if they weren't what you were. It isn't that different than someone calling me a chimp. Yea, I don't think that I would like that much, either. Makes sense." Jamie nodded a little as if to agree with his own thoughts than to solidify the truth of what he said. His eyebrows lowered at her explanation as they began to walk, clearing the distance between them and the city. It was harder to tell which direction the city was in when they weren't on top of the hill. He found himself pausing now and then to check on the larger landmarks to ensure they didn't get lost.
"So why did your family live where it was illegal to have those animals? Guess it was just the best place for them to be at the time?" He didn't want to trip going down the hill so he would, on occasion, reach out to balance himself on the human-sized and greater trees that were on the hill until they reached the more level ground that was at the bottom of it. When she mentioned being the guardian to her guardians he laughed softly and shook his head but made no comment.
He nodded towards what looked like a town road, "I bet that leads to the place we saw." Even looked like someone had laid down some gravel on the beaten path. He crouched on the ground to give it a better look and then looked up at Kaylen from his vantage point, "Looks like horse and carriage or something like that. Not a car or anything." He couldn't have said that that meant that they were or weren't in Rhydin, just that a certain type of vehicle was being used along this route. It wasn't too hard to figure out, given the cresent-shaped cuts in the ground from the horses' hooves.
"I wouldn't say I spent my whole life looking for the bracelet," he admitted, getting back up to his feet and continuing the walk down the road which he hoped would lead them into town instead of away from it, "It was just something that happened to me as a kid, I guess. Then my mom had us move out of town, she was just so frightened of the political situation and what had happened to me. She wanted to put us in a safer place. I spent a lot of time trying to forget what happened and not think about it but sometimes things just stay on your mind. After I lost my girlfriend and my job it left me with only one thing on my mind-- what happened to me as a kid and how I never really understood it."
"So I guess I was just in a place in life where I thought if I was ever going to find an answer... I ought to. Maybe even Lucy has already figured it out, who knows. I took all my money, packed up everything I needed and I've been searching these past few months. Now is the closest I've even come to someone hearing about the Silver Ouroboros."

"They are very touchy about what I call them. Guess that's why I purposely make them mad now and again." Cause Kaylen was awnry like that. "I was born in New York City. Heff and Jade didn't come to be until I turned 21. Until then I was just like anyone else. Had a cat..regular cat. A fish, in a bowl. The idea of a spirit guide tattoo was a great honor for me. Two was stupid in hindsight. But it made my parents so happy. I had no idea what I was getting into. Was just starting to figure it out when I ended up here." Presenting a whole new set of challenges. Might be one of the first times she'd opened up to him about her situation without following it with a joke or jovial smile. It's hard being a single parent of two kids. It's even harder being a single parent of two animals with the IQ of kids.
Whether heading into town was comforting or unnerving was still undecided. You never know what you'll run into when entering a strange place. Some towns were more guarded while others may greet strangers with open arms. Was best to mentally prepare for anything. "A carriage?" Hadn't seen one of those since the wild west show at the fair. "You think we went back in time?" Stranger things have happened. "Or people like the old way of doing things?"
Kaylen walked and listened, staying silent for the most part until he was done. "Do you think what happened as a kid has affected your life since then? Maybe you wanted to be cut loose so you could go on this journey?"

"I'm not sure." He admitted to her with a small shrug, looking down at the line cut into the ground as they continued walking, "I'm not an expert or anything. I just know that's not a car track, for sure. And if it was some weird hovering thing it wouldn't have a track at all." Rhydin had taught him er, interesting, things about what it was to travel. He stared down the path as they continued walking, "Maybe we did go back in history." The word history echoed in his mind. Why did it bother him so much, that word?
A recollection came to him from the back of his mind and he found himself asking her about it instead of thinking the question over first, "Wasn't that something in the book we read about the price for reading it? Didn't it say something about history?" Honestly, the shock of their relocation and learning about her strange living and yet ink tattoos had blocked out some of his thoughts on it. Did she remember what he'd said.
"I dunno how it affected me as a kid. I just kept thinking about it here and there and sometimes, when I have a nightmare, I get to feeling like I had a long time. But really... I think it did." Truth was, the smallest thing could affect a child. What foods they would come to love and hate and what they would later on symbolize. Jamie blinked and then looked back to her.
"That's a building." His pace quickened. Frightened, but also wanting to know where they were. Maybe someone in town would help them instead of hurt them. Being that it was obviously a civilization, there had to be something *civil* to it. Right?

"For not being an expert, you sure know a lot about tracks. Maybe you're selling yourself short." Stomping her booted foot into the ground. "What kind of track is this?" Whether he said a boot or a Kaylen footprint, she'd still laugh. "Expert!" Eyeing the town in the distance.
The book and it's weird price seemed days ago, not the mere few moments which had passed. Maybe it was the way they traveled, but even she was a bit fuzzy on the cost now. "It did say history. Something about reading it's history...then going back?" Brow wrinkling as those wheels started turning. "Do you think it takes you back to the point where the last history of the item was written? ...or maybe the point where it began? ....but if we did that, then you run into your younger self and there's some kind of really bad mojo about meeting yourself. Quantum physics or something strange like that. I don't know. I'm not a scientist. Besides, nothing that's happened yet has much scientific bearing in the 'real' world." adding air quotations.
She could tell the event had more than merely affected Jamie, it had been burnt into his memory if not his psyche permanently. Kaylen hoped he'd find what he needed on this journey to set him free. Whatever the discovery may be. The guy was starting to grow on her a little bit. Though she'd be hard pressed to ever admit it to any of the other ears around.
When he sped up to hurry into town, she didn't follow suit. "Jamie..wait! What if we did go back in time? We might stick out like a sore thumb.." If he persisted in hurrying, she'd take off after him, preparing herself for anything.

"Ah... that is the footprint of..." he peered down closely at where she had planted the imprint of her shoe, "a very strange woman." His grin appeared instantly afterward, as if satisfied with himself for volleying what she had said. He stopped for a moment, setting his bag down and rubbing his shoulder. The weight of the bag had started to strain his shoulder after all that walking.
"I'm not sure but I guess it must do something like that. I remember it had to do with history and the item. You think the book told me about the item and then took us to where it was?" That was a bit fortuitous and hard to believe, even in a world where tattoos lived and time could be such a fabric and easily moved thing. Still, he found in the back of his mind a voice that kept saying... stranger things have happened. Right?
"You think I could?" He turned around and then looked back at her, "If I was here before, I had to of been really young. I don't really remember this area at all... but I was a little kid when we moved away. Mom probably wouldn't have let me wander off miles from town so it could be..."
"I guess if we did...we would. If we only went back fifteen or twenty years that wouldn't be so bad. But back in time? Really back in time... I dunno. In my town they used horses and carts and all of that. What do you think we should do the, if not go into town?" He was almost ready to pick up his bag and continue trotting towards their destination but she had a point. They could stick out really badly and that sort of attention might not help them. Might even cause them greater worries than what they were currently dealing with.

"So you think I'm strange?" Feigning wounded pride with those dark, brooding puppy dog eyes to top off the down turned lips. No fear though, for it wouldn't last long til he'd hear her laugh. "Bah, I am. Who am I kidding?" Noticing the way he seemed to lean after lugging the bag so long. "You want me to carry that for awhile? You'll be walking like the Hunchback if you keep up that stance much longer."
All the questions he asked could not be answered until they risked going into the village. So Kaylen didn't even try. "I don't know for sure. I do know Thalas made me scared to risk reading any of the books that might pertain to me. Sounds like anything could happen and they won't be liable for accidents, injuries or death. I have a feeling no contract is needed around here when the danger is verbally implied." If shit happens, they're on their own.
"I bet, if you've been here before, there'll be something that rings a bell. A certain sight, a smell in the air..who knows. Best not to bet on anything being too easy though." Tiptoeing to try and see the place better. Safe to say, those extra two inches didn't buy her a better view than Jamie already had.
In regards to going into town, there was a bit of thought put into what the next step might be. "We stick to the treeline there.." Pointing off to the distance where the edge of a forest skirted around the town. "Creep closer and do some snooping before strolling in amongst them. If we don't fit in, maybe, with a few alterations, we can."

When she teased him he smiled and shook his head at her as if to discourage the behavior but the gesture was anything but. When she offered to help carry his bag his eyebrows lowered and he gave a 'no thanks' shake of his head. It took a certain length of friendship or desperation in a situation before a guy could just accept help. The only situation that might have been worse is if he accepted her help and then a band of whoever decided to attack. Nothing better than a group of people witnessing a guy hanging off his bags to a smaller counterpart because he was 'too tired.' Yea. It presented exactly the sort of strong front that got a guy tasting the dirt on the bottom of other men's shoes. Didn't matter that she could take care of herself, anyway.
"Yea, if I have been here before maybe something will come to me soon. So we'll stick to the tree line and get a little bit closer and try to observe the si--" he stopped talking and lifted one hand up, it stayed nearby his ear and motioned that she pause, silent like he. He thought he heard something.
His voice had become a whisper, "Hear that? I think someone is coming." Immediately he started to look for some thicker underbrush or something for them to take cover. He pointed about ten yards off to a fallen maple tree, "Behind that." He was already leaping over that way, dodging behind the trunk. He had to stay crouched low for the trunk to hope to cover him and he looked at her, "It's coming closer."
At first it sounded like a drumming but there was a sharpness to the sound of it. A metal clip that started to sound more clear with the swaying of leather. It was a horse-drawn carriage, he could see that now as it came around the edge of the hill. There wasn't much he could make of what was inside the carriage but he could tell that the driver was wearing some old-timey looking clothes. A white shirt that blossomed at the throat, a coat with brass buttons and a hat pulled down over his brow. Jamie looked at Kaylen with an arched brow as the carriage rode past them, following the road into town.
"I guess that answers some of our questions."

Equal rights and women's lib made carrying a man's bad perfectly acceptable in the modern world. Kaylen would think nothing of helping a friend out if only to keep his shoulder from taking a turn for the worst. "Suit yourself. The offer still stands if you choose to take it."
She had to think about her own past and what could be remembered through the eyes of a child. Not much. A carousel ride, trip to the zoo, birthday party blips from whence faces and names of the other kids were long removed. There were some clear memories of a house, even her bedroom; but, for the most part, there was no recollection of the neighborhood in which her younger years were spent.
Before long they were scurrying for the cover of that tree to avoid oncoming traffic. She crouched low, straining to see past the twigs and leaves as the carriage came into view but the lower position didn't allow much clarity until it drew closer. "What do you see?" speaking extra softly.
Both would get a gander at the driver's dress about the same time. Kaylen held back a snicker knowing the predicament she was now in. Once the carriage was far enough past to speak normally, a chuckle escaped. "I'm toast." Knowing her t-shirt, jeans and zip up boots would never pass the snuff here. Those dark eyes scanned the horizon where the town lay. Musing aloud. "I'm assuming people hang their laundry out to dry..so ..again, I'm assuming borrowing some might be a good option. What say you?" Eyeing Jamie with a hopeful, if optimistic, expression. For getting caught could be the death of them.

Jamie was not as obviously out of place as she was. The shirt he wore was plain, except for the stitching on it it might have passed for a peasant shirt. Like her, though, there wasn't much that could be done to hide the construction of his pants on the build of his bag. He watched the carriage drift behind the hill and rose back to his feet, looking at her.
"I guess finding some hanging laundry really is our only option." He shoved his hands in his pockets to see if he had any coins on him, "I don't suppose our money will do them any good if we leave it behind." A sheepish smile before he picked up his bag, "I guess we'll find some houses if we head in more."
Kaylen was right about the laundry. As Jamie and her walked closer into town more of the rooves could be seen, some with clotheslines. It was a bit trickey, he could hear kids screaming in play not too far off. The weather was good, it would be easy for people to be outside if not to tend to their farms and the like. He scratched the back of his neck, set down his bag and looked at a promising line of clothes tethered from the end of a porch to a tree, limply swinging. The house seemed about right-- no one was outside and there wasn't any smoke coming from the chimney so perhaps they hadn't come home from the day or had left to go deeper in to town. There was a small white fence which surrounded the property, something one could easily walk over that seemed more for decoration than purpose. He looked at her and then made a shrug, "This looks like our best bet."
It was good the area was wooded, mostly. Where the roads were were obvious breaks in the trees but the tree he propped his stuff to was perfect. The branches were thick and hung low like an umbrella.

She felt like James Bond, sneaking around the area trying to keep out of sight yet get the job done. The first job being obtaining better clothes. The next job she still wasn't sure of. Depended mainly on Jamie to direct the work from there.
As they approached the seemingly, empty house, Kaylen peered around some bushes at the choices available. "Best option we got." Though the clothes were hardly to her liking. Oh well. Beggars can't be choosers. In this case, stealers can't be choosers. She joined him by the tree watching the landscape around them for any signs of people. When the coast was clear, she'd be the first to head towards the clothesline.
"This lady must be huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge." Both arms spreading out a plain, gray dress which was at least four sizes too large. "We could use this for a parachute." Time being of the essences, she really shouldn't be so damn picky. None of the other garments were going to be any smaller. The dress was snatched after a huge sigh of indignation. Sure, Kaylen may not have much of a figure in the first place but this was only going to add insult to injury.
"What did you find?" Scurrying back to the relative shelter of the tree to hop into the dress. It was large enough to hide her jeans so those were kept on for now. Her belt served nicely to wrap the outfit so it was more appealing yet still nothing to write home about. Only then was the t-shirt removed from beneath. All without showing the least bit of skin.

"Huh?" He was trying to give her privacy by keeping his back to her. As he took off his shirt and put it on, well, it was a little tight. When he turned to look at her, like an oversized ghost, he laughed. He pulled at the end of his shirt and looked back to her, "I think she had a son on something. There is no way that I'm wearing his pants." Leas the rip in the bottom, or crush a part of him he'd very much rather remain in tact. He rubbed his hands together, sized up the building and then looked back at her.
She was able to pull it together with the belt and looked, well, different. He took the tight shirt off and tried another, which ended up looking... all right on him. It was still tight but at least he didn't look like he had robbed someone of their clothes this way. His pants...he thought he could get away with. If he didn't know to look he would not have noticed her's. For his bag he simply wrapped it up in a bed sheet and then nodded to her with a smile, "I'm set, how about you?"
Where was everyone? It felt quiet. He looked at the ground and then back to Kayla, not sure if he should ask the question, "Should we check the house for money... or maybe some food?"
Someone could be just sleeping in there, after all. Were they pressing their luck too much?

A tote sack would fit better than the massive, balloon of a dress. What size was this woman anyway? Worse yet, Jamie's option was too small. "You are going to wear pants though, right. Cause I will stare if you don't. Gotta be honest. You know this reminds me of? What's that nursery rhyme? Jack Sprat or something?" The wife was huge and hubby was a twig.
Kaylen couldn't help but whine. "I look like a marshmallow. Ten kids could hide under here." Trying to make the poofy bottom lay flat. Was not going to happen. Luckily, there was a realization that looks didn't matter so much as not getting caught. Finally stepping out from the bushes to peer over at the duds he'd managed. Eyes widening a touch. "Nice pecs you got there." Any breathing women around would be gawking..cause she was gawking. You can blink now. Went the inward dialogue in her head. Was going to be an interesting trip. "Yeah, anyway..set, I'm all set." Making the decision to look at anything but him.
"I guess they don't take American dollars here. Local money might be useful." Eyeing the house a moment. "Doesn't look like anyone's around. Let's peek in the windows. Hopefully there's no dogs to wake up the whole town." She had to gather up the extra yards of material just to walk over toward the house. Was then an idea came to mind.
"Why don't I gather the laundry while you snoop? Make things look normal to anyone passing by. If we're slinking around the windows, people might start to question what we're up to. No one in their right mind enjoys housework."
