Jessie remembered everything. The dreams had made sure of that in their horrifyingly stark details. He didn't want to think about it. There were more important things to discuss. Hearing Jacob's voice and then feeling the touch of his hand were two of those more important things on Jessie's mind.
His long fingers curled in Jacob's grasp and he held on as tightly as he could. Jessie tugged, hoping to get Jacob even closer. He needed to feel Jacob's embrace and be comforted by it. Though Jessie had been sleeping for three days, he was hardly at peace.
"Jacob," his voice cracked, a dry husk of it's usual thick and playful self. "Water, please?" He didn't want Jacob to let go, not really. But if there was talking to be done, his throat couldn't handle the scratchy dryness of being without moisture for three days.
He blinked his eyes several times, trying in vain to bring Jacob's blur into better view. It was frustrating and Jessie's face began to flush with anger. Why couldn't he see? His eyes didn't hurt at all, though they were bloodshot and weepy. He simply couldn't see more than fuzzy and furry blurs. They were colorful, at least.
"Did they get the wine?" The last thing that Jessie was doing was delivering a few more cases of wine to a wedding. He had to know if the order had been filled. There had been some trouble with orders going unfilled, so this was important.
At least, to Jessie, it was.

"Okay, no problem. I'll be right back." He had to peel himself out of Jessie's tight hold to break away. It was only for a minute or two that he was gone, going down the hall and returning with a glass of water as requested. When he returned to his seat he spoke softly, "You're going to need to sit up if you plan on drinking any of this, you know."
"You were hurt pretty badly in the car accident. Even though you had your seat belt on you still banged your head hard against the window when the truck rolled." Jacob didn't know his eyesight was blurry, but it was no doubt due to that part of the accident. He was more so under the belief that Jessie would have a splitting headache. It could be that Jessie had already slept off that unpleasant part the three days he was dreaming.
"The wine?" It took him a moment to even remember what Jessie was talking about. The fulfilling of that ridiculous order his father had sent Jessie on wasn't a mental priority. "Oh, the wine." He handed Jessie the glass of wine once he propped himself up enough to be able to drink, "Don't worry about it. The wedding went on just fine." He had no idea how the wedding had gone. He could have cared less about the wedding given the current situation.

When Jacob returned with the glass of water, Jessie had managed to scoot himself towards the headboard and was sitting up, sort of. More like he was leaned against the headboard with a few pillows behind him for support. He could hear Jacob's return before he could see it. It was only when Jacob spoke that Jessie turned his head to look in that direction.
It wasn't really a gaze or a look. His eyes couldn't focus and he stared at what he thought was Jacob's face. When he reached for the glass of water, the back of his hand struck Jacob's lightly before he found the glass and grasped it. He found his mouth with the glass and that first sip of water was pure heaven! Jessie closed his eyes and sighed.
He was relieved that the wedding had gone as planned. It was important to Jessie that he do a good job for Dr. Hutchenson. If he did a good job for him, then it would relieve some of the pressure between the Doctor and his son.
Jessie opened his eyes and turned his head towards Jacob once again. "Please, come here." Stretching out his hand, he blindly reached for Jacob. He wanted to be held and comforted. He wanted to comfort Jacob, soften the blow of the news Jessie had to break.
"Hold me?"

"Scoot over," Jacob said softly, a smile in his voice as if pandering to a pouting child. Jessie was, of course, more than that but he couldn't help but be amused at the sweet vulnerability Jessie fronted. After getting some space beside him, he took off his shoes and sat in the bed next to him, shoulder pressed against shoulder until he wrapped one arm around him, "You're going to be drowsy for the rest of today. The pain medicine they put you on does that." It was hard to tell if Jacob spoke out of experience or knowledge.
Jacob was about to say something else when the doctor appeared in the doorway, announced seconds before by the scoff of his shoes on hardwood floors. The man was even wearing a white lab coat as if they were in a hospital. He paused uncomfortably when he first stepped in and then went over to Jessie, placing the ends of the stethoscope in his ears as he spoke.
"Good morning, Jessie. You may call me Dr. John if you like," it wasn't his real name, anyone even half introduced to their game would know that. But it gave Jessie something to say if anyone asked, including himself, "How is your breathing? I need to hear a few breaths." He placed the cold circle against his chest and asked him to breath. Jacob adjusted so his arm wasn't around Jessie and he wouldn't be interfering with the exam. The doctor took a listen and nodded, "I was concerned about your breath, you broke a few ribs but it looks as though they are healing nicely. You were lucky not to have any internal bleeding." His eyes went back to Jessie and he pressed a thumb at the top of his brow to pull back the eyelid so he could see better with his flashlight. "How are you seeing, Jessie? While you were in and out the last few days I have record of you complaining about blurred vision and a few ear aches. Are they persisting? You were struck pretty substantially on the side of the head."
Jacob felt odd, as if listening in on something that he shouldn't be. He whispered in Jessie's ear, "If you would like me to come back later I can." It was, after all, Jessie's exam.

Once within Jacob's arms, Jessie sighed softly and closed his eyes. He placed his head upon Jacob's shoulder and listened to him speak. Sure, Jessie had some questions. For example, he wanted to know where the hell he was. But in that moment, nothing else mattered. Jacob was home and the comforts that went with it. And though the refined scent of cologne had faded and left in it's wake a pleasant nothingness, Jessie loved the smell of Jacob and was comforted even more. The sound of Jacob's voice was like a balm and his words brought a smile to Jessie's face. Jacob never said anything unnecessarily. So to not hear that he was going to be just fine from Jacob's lips let Jessie know that he would be just fine.
Still, the question pressed to the front of his mind. Where was he? Choosing to simply relax in Jacob's arms and not ruin the tender moment with a question Jacob might not be able to answer, he remained silent. It was enough to be comforted. But, Jessie waited too long to ask, because next thing he knew there was the good Doctor. He submitted to the exam, as unpleasant as it was to be poked and prodded. Jacob was here and that made it okay. The doctor asked about his eyes and ears, but before Jessie could answer, Jacob was whispering.
By this time, Jacob had already scoot just far enough to be out of the way, but not too far as to be off of the bed. Jessie reached for and grabbed Jacob's hand, almost in a panic. "No, don't go. Please." Holding onto Jacob's hand tightly, he responded to the question. Jacob may as well hear sooner than later. "I can only see blobs of color, blurs of light and dark. Nothing more. But my ears have stopped ringing." He sighed and gave Jacob's hand a squeeze. "Will I ever be able to see again?"

"You should. You have a lot of inflammation," the Doctor sounded as most do-- Calculating, observing a piece of meat while simultaneously talking to the soul as if they were separate. It was a special doctor that would talk to the body like they would the heart. This man wasn't one of those. He opened Jessie's eye further, flashing his light down it a couple of times and asking him to look up, to the left and to the right.
Jacob's breath caught when he heard about his eyesight being poor. He hadn't noticed that the man was having trouble seeing him. Was he that blind that it was something beyond his notice? He was mentally chiding himself for it, for lacking that sort of important detail in someone he cared about.
"Your muscles still have a healthy range of movement so it doesn't appear as though there is any disconnect. I don't see any broken blood vessels." The Doctor put his light down and made a short smile to Jessie, "We will give it a few days and if you haven't recovered then, we'll try some steroid shots if you still look enflammed. The most important thing for you now, is rest. No staring at the tv screen or phone for hours." He glanced around his own room before looking back to Jessie, "You may go home tonight if you find you can stand and get around on your own. Otherwise, wait until the morning." There wasn't much time left for Jessie to respond to the latter comments before the Doctor rose and whisked out of the room as a white lab coat blur.
Softly, from the haze of what could be seen Jacob spoke, "How bad is it?"

Before the doctor left, Jessie closed his eyes and lay his head back against the pillow. He sighed and then turned his head towards Jacob's hushed voice. He could hear the anxiety in that voice and it made Jessie incredibly sad. "I'll be alright, Jacob. Once the inflammation is gone, I'll be right as rain. You'll see. It might take a few more days before I'm able to stand with crutches and get around without tripping and falling. We'll be home soon. I promise."
The doctor had left a bad taste in Jessie's mouth, but he didn't want to give voice to that. Jacob had enough to worry about with the strained relationship with his father. What was once speculation was now fact. There was no hiding the fact that Jessie was more to Jacob than a friend. Not after what the doctor had seen upon entering the room.
Instead, Jessie put on his best smile and brought Jacob's knuckles to his lips for a soft kiss. "Have you been here this whole time? You must be exhausted. Come here and we'll take a nap, okay?"
